FAQ: Motor Vehicle Points

Penalties and Fines: Point Scale (Moving Violations)

Any driver who is convicted of a moving violation, including offenses committed while operating a motorized bicycle, will be assessed points for each conviction in accordance with the N.J.S.A Point Scale. MVC will automatically send an Advisory Notice if your point total is between 6 and 11. For a total of 12 or more points, MVC will issue an automatic Notice of Scheduled Suspension.

It is important that a Driver accused of committing a moving violation be aware of the consequences of entering a plea.  In addition to the motor vehicle points there may be insurance points assessed by an individual's insurance company which may result in an increased premium.  You should consult with an attorney before entering into a guilty plea to a moving violation.  In most cases, a violation can be amended to a lesser charge to avoid the assessment of points and avoid the collateral consequences of entering a guilty plea to the original moving violation.  Call our office at (973) 344-0808 to make an appointment to discuss your particular case.
